Show video and image advertising

Written by Daniel Mylotte

This long article is optimized for AI ingestion. Use the table of contents (at right in page view, dropdown above in chat views) to find what you need instead of scrolling.

Click the screen icon in the left hand sidebar to show the Display app menus. These will only be available when a display-enabled site is selected in the Current Site selector.

ASSETS

Assets are your video and image files. A wide range of file types are compatible. See this list for specifics.

Uploading assets

Click the Upload button in the box top left, or drag your asset files on to the box to get started.

Maximum file size is around 100MB which will limit the length and/or resolution of videos. For best results, increase the compression on large video files.

A dialog appears which allows for batch renaming of the assets. It's strongly recommended that you name your files with a standard nomenclature to facilitate sorting and locating assets as the size of the list increases.

Video files will take some time to encode before showing "Ready" in the Status column.

Best practices for asset nomenclature:

  • Avoid special characters - limit names to letters and numbers

  • Name the files descriptively with multiple keywords and a standard separator, from most general to most specific, e.g. "2026_sales_BOGO_shoes_mens"

Using the image editor

When uploading individual image files you have the option of launching the built-in image editor to make adjustments to the image before completing the upload process.

To skip this, click "Upload Directly." Or click "Edit Image" to launch the editor.

Making edits

You'll be immediately presented with the crop tool. The image must be cropped to fit a 16:9 screen.

Additionally, you have the option of using the edit tools available in the left hand sidebar. Once complete, name your image in the "Asset Name" field at top and click the blue "EXPORT IMAGE" button top right.

Create from template

Templates are pre-uploaded images that are designed to be filled in by end users at individual sites in order to add specific details like prices, times, etc.

Click "Create from template" and choose from the available images. These may be Startle's default templates or your organization's custom templates they've made available for you.

You'll be presented with the image editor where you can add text and other details. Click the blue "EXPORT IMAGE" button top right when finished, and you'll find your new asset displayed in the assets table.

Managing Display Assets

The lower half of the Assets page displays a table of all current assets. At the top are options for filtering and sorting. Use the search field to filter by Asset Name. Additionally you can filter by tags or by usage.

Refreshing the list:

Some changes may not automatically be reflected in data on the assets table due to the way it loads the information. This is why you see a refresh button at the top near the Search button. For example, when removing an asset from a playlist you may find it takes some time for that asset's status to change in the table, and for it to be available for deletion. If this happens you can hit the refresh button and it will load the latest data immediately.

Setting dates and tags

Clicking the pencil icon for any asset row brings up the Metadata settings for that asset.

Setting Start or Expiration dates/times will automatically enable or disable this asset in active playlists. Use this to programmatically control when assets display without the need to make manual changes at exact times.

How and when to use Tags

Tags are extremely useful for managing variations between locations or location types. See the Studio page for information on setting up Tags across your account.

Tagging an asset will limit its visibility to only sites that share that tag (as set on the Studio>Tags>Assign Tags page). For example, if you wish to show a certain video only in stores that are participating in a special promotion you can tag those stores with a unique tag in the Studio app's Assign Tags page, then add the same tag in that asset's Metadata.

Now this asset can be included in a playlist that is copied identically across all stores, but it will only appear in sites where the corresponding tag is applied. This greatly reduces the need to maintain separate playlists and run separate copies across site variations.

Asset Actions

At far right of the Assets table are buttons for the following actions:

  • Preview (eye icon) - view the asset content

  • Edit (pencil icon) - edit the asset name and metadata

  • Image edit - re-launch the image editor (only for image assets)

  • Delete (bin icon) - permanently delete this asset (greyed out if in use by any playlist)

Asset versions

Asset versions are used to rotate different versions of the same video programmatically, without having to manually swap them in and out of playlists. Click the asset edit button to open the edit panel, then hit the Versions tab.

New asset versions MUST BE uploaded on this edit panel, not through the top level uploader on the Assets page.

Click "Upload Version" to add a version to THIS ASSET.

Activating or scheduling different versions

Manually activate a version by clicking the green "Make Live" button on that version row.

To schedule version changes in advance, click the arrow at the far right of any version row to unfold the scheduling controls.

Give the version a name and select the date range during which this version should activate. Click Save when done.

To delete a version, click the 3 dots at the right of the row and choose "Delete."

PLAYLISTS

Playlists are collections of assets which will be shown sequentially in rotation.

Create a playlist

Click "Create playlist" in the left sidebar under the "Playlists" heading, OR click the blue plus sign at the top right of the All Playlists page.

Give the Playlist a name. Then click "Add more assets" to start adding content.

In the dialog window you can check any assets you wish to include.

By default the volume for video assets will be set to zero. If you change this to play the video's embedded audio it will immediately stop the background music on this player (if it is simultaneously used for playing background music on this site) whenever this video plays. The song will not resume when the video ends - the next song will play.

Add multiple

Use the "Qty" dropdown to add more than one instance of a single asset to the playlist (so that it plays more frequently in a single playlist rotation). This enables the "Placement" option. Select a placement scheme that will insert the new asset instances at the selected placement interval throughout the playlist.

Ordering

You can rearrange the order of assets in the playlist by clicking the 6 dots on the left of any row and dragging up or down.

Once complete, click the blue "Create Playlist" button at bottom right to save the new playlist.

Replacing assets

Replacing allows a quick swap of one asset for another. Click the pencil icon at the right of any row to replace that asset in the playlist.

Bulk delete

Select multiple assets by checking the selection box at the left of the asset row. At the bottom of the list, click the red "Remove" button.

Auto sort and shuffle

Shuffle the assets randomly by clicking the "Sort" button at the top right of the playlist. Use "Auto sort" to ensure that multiple instances of the same asset get distributed more evenly after shuffling.

SCHEDULES

Schedules are required to show content on screens. Playlists alone will not appear until they are scheduled.

Create a new schedule

Click "Create schedule" in the left sidebar under the Schedule heading, OR click the blue plus sign at top right of the All Schedules page.

Schedule details

  1. Give the schedule a name - the more descriptive the better, particularly if you use many schedules

  2. Choose what playlist to schedule

Start and stop

By default a schedule will "Start now" and "Never end." Choose dates to schedule the playlist on a certain date range.

Schedules start and stop at midnight only

Active times

Schedules can be limited to running at certain times of the day. By default this is off, and they will play "All day," "Every day." Click "Specific hours" or "Specific days" to limit their playback to more exact times.

A single schedule can run at different times on different days using multiple active times, but the same schedule can't run a second time on the same day as an existing active slot. Use an additional schedule to run at non-contiguous times on one day.

Upon saving, the new information will be immediately sent to the hardware for the selected site only. Changes to what is on the screen "right now" should be reflected shortly, depending on the size of any new content it needs to download, as well as the speed of the network at the site.

SCREENSAVER SHOWING: In the absence of any schedule content, most newer model Startle devices will revert to showing a Startle logo screensaver in place of your content. If you're seeing this, it's likely because nothing is scheduled for that time.

ARENA

Arena is an add-on product for Display customers who show live sport. It uses live data from the leagues and broadcasters to automatically create and schedule promotional content for upcoming fixtures, as well as recaps like scores, and various highlights reels, etc.

Fixtures

Selecting games

At the top of the Arena>Fixtures page you have the option of simply selecting all games from any of these broadcasters: Sky Sports, TNT Sports, or Prime Video.

You can also browse the list of individual games in the Upcoming Fixtures section and check the box to include those games if you want more specificity. Use the Competition, Provider, or Team search to find upcoming games:

Copy

You can copy the Fixtures selections to another site here using similar tools to other Copy functions within Startle Studio.

This copy is for the Fixtures selections ONLY. It does not copy the Assets, Playlists, or Schedules. Use the primary Display Copy function at the bottom of the sidebar for this. Arena requires its own Display assets. See below.

Adding Arena content to Display Playlists

Fixture selection alone has no effect until Arena assets are included in your Display playlists.

On the Playlists page, hit the pencil icon on any playlist to add new assets. In the dialog window change the top tab to "Startle Arena Assets" and you'll see the following Arena-specific asset types that you can slot in to the playlist like any other Display asset.

  • Upcoming Games - will show an automatically generated video based on your fixtures selections and future dates

  • Next Game - will show an automatically generated video for the next fixture selection

  • Breaking News - a collection of timely videos from a third party sport video provider

  • Viral Videos - a collection of popular topical videos from a third party sport video provider

  • Rugby Upcoming Games - will show an automatically generated video for upcoming rugby games only, based on your fixture selections and future dates

It's typical to use these assets several times in any given playlist since you will usually have a large amount of potential content depending on the season and frequency of upcoming games. Keep in mind that in a seasonal lull some of these assets may show nothing.

COPY

To duplicate one site's display settings to other sites, use the Copy function. For large accounts it's possible to achieve complicated combinations of destination sites using text and tag filtering.

Copies are DESTRUCTIVE. Once a copy has been made to a site, the site's previous display settings are gone forever. There is no undo feature, and no possibility of recovery.

Best Practices

If you are routinely creating multiple display profiles inside a single account it's helpful to use tags to provide clear distinctions between different site categories. See the Tags section of the Studio page. Not only do the tags provide visual feedback in site lists but they simplify the process of selecting copy destinations.

Making selections

At the top of the Copy page you'll find both search and tag filters. Use these to refine the list of destinations sites as needed. You'll now have the option of selecting individual sites using the checkboxes in their corresponding rows, or you can use either "Select All" boxes at the top of the list to either a) "Select all on this page" or, b) "Select All" meaning this page and all subsequent pages.

Confirm and Copy

When the desired selections are made, click the green button at top right "Copy to selected sites" to proceed to the confirmation dialog. Here you'll be presented with a summary of the copy operation that you can scan for assurance that your selections were correct. Finally, click the copy button to launch the copy.

Next steps...

The copy procedure runs multiple operations in the background which happen in series and can take substantial time to complete, depending on the size of the list of destination sites. The player hardware is then notified of its new instructions and may also need to download content. Therefore you could have a wait of 10-20 minutes for large copy operations to be reflected in currently playing video.

STANDBY SCHEDULE

Standby is a "sleep mode" that will turn video off programmatically. Set this by entering the ACTIVE TIMES for your display. Note that these must fall within a single day range. Outside these times the screen will go blank.

If a day is not enabled, the screen will never activate on this day.

Click "Save Changes" at the bottom right.
