Rock and Roll Bingo

The classic pub game, delivered digitally through Startle for play via the Rock and Roll Bingo app

Written by Daniel Mylotte

The digital version of Rock and Roll Bingo leverages Startle's media platform and a free player app.

Players download the Rock and Roll Bingo app from either the App Store or Google Play. They register as a user and find your pub in the app.

To begin creating games select a site that has the Rock and Roll Bingo add-on enabled in the "CURRENT SITE" selector at the top left of the page. You will see the app icon in the left sidebar. Click this to load the Rock and Roll Bingo app:

Upcoming events

The table on this page shows all scheduled events in the future.

The actions column at right offers the following options for upcoming games:

  • View Details

  • Copy - copy this game to other sites (must also be subscribed to the Rock and Roll Bingo add-on)

  • Delete

Schedule new event

To create a new game, click the green "Add Event" button at top right of the Upcoming Events table, or click the "Schedule New Event" menu item in the left sidebar.

Step 1: Event settings

Start date and time:

Set the Start date using the calendar date picker, then choose the Start time on that date

It's not possible to schedule games immediately. This is to protect against failures from poor download speeds. A grace period is required to ensure adequate download time. Schedule games in advance to achieve a quick succession from one game to the next.

Repeat

This toggle switch enables automatic repeats for this game every week (off by default)

Number of games

Choose one to nine games in the dropdown under "How many games would you like to schedule?"

These will not need to be all the same game theme if you choose more than one game. You'll choose the game details on the next page.

Mid-game interval

Choose one, three, or five minute pauses under "How long should the mid-game interval be?" This controls the length of the pause between the two rounds of a single game.

Between game break

Choose five, ten, or fifteen minute breaks under "How long should the break between games be?" This controls the break between one game and the next.

Click the green "Next Step" button to move to the next page.

Step 2: Game settings

On the Step 2 page you'll find the selections for each games type and theme.

Under "What game do you want to play first?" you'll see boxes for:

  1. Rock and Roll Bingo

  2. Bar Room Bingo

  3. Brain Box Bingo

Click any box to highlight that game. The available themes for that game will appear now under "Select game theme". You CAN SELECT more than one theme which will cause the system to randomly select from your choices at game time.

If you've chosen multiple games on page 1 you will now have additional options below for subsequent games. Complete the selections as needed and click the green "Next Step" button bottom right to move to page 3

Step 3: Confirm event

Step 3 displays a summary of your game choices. Click the green "Schedule event" button to proceed with these options, or use the "Previous" button to go back and make changes.

The Upcoming Events page should now reflect your new game selections.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR SUCCESSFUL GAMES

Successful execution of the game playback on your venue's Startle device depends on stable network connections. There's a mandatory grace period for how soon a game can be set in the future. This increases the likelihood that the device will be able to download the files it needs, even if the network conditions are suboptimal.

If you are new to the game we highly recommend running test games with yourself as the player so you understand the procedures from the player perspective.

If a game fails to play correctly, this is almost always due to poor network conditions. Factors such as congestion (especially from things like guest wifi) can interrupt the download process and cause games to fail. In case of problems, ensure your device shows online on the Studio page. Offline devices will not be able to play scheduled games, even when scheduled well in advance, because a live connection is required between servers, Startle devices, and player devices.

Playing the game

About ten minute prior to game time, players can open the Rock and Roll Bingo app. It will use the device's location services to try to identify your venue. This requires that we have your correct address set in our back end settings.

If players' apps can't find the venue it's likely that either a) they have denied location permissions to the app, or b) we don't have an accurate address for your venue in our system. If multiple players encounter this it's more likely to be the address. Contact Relentless Support in the Startle live chat for help.

Players will select your venue when the game nears. They'll then be loaded into a waiting room until the game begins.

Stopping a game

The best way to stop a game is for no one to join. A game with no players will cancel itself within a couple minutes. Prior to game time there's a cut off point where it can no longer be cancelled, so by refraining from joining it's effectively cancelling the game. There is no way to stop a game with players that's already underway.

Past Events

The Past Events page shows results for recently played games, including the winners ID.

Here you can download media to print for your venue, including QR codes that link to the player app download.
